DIG stands for Domain Information Groper. The command has the same purposes and uses of nslookup command,
but unlike the latter can not be found on Windows systems. Moreover, according to the
manuals and publications DIG seems to be more flexible and powerful of NSLOOKUP .
In essence the information you can get are as follows:
1. IP address associated with the domain required;
2. correct domain;
3. domain name of mail server;
4. elements of the Start of Authority areas
5. Time To Live - TTL
Also you can do the following:
1. verify the existence of the requested domain on the DNS server to which the request is made;
2. verify that the DNS server works correctly when it does not know the requested domain and therefore requires the
information to another DNS server;
3. find the IP address associated with the domain;
4. find the IP address for the server that hosts the service requested (eg dig@server_ip www.networkadministrator.it
Web server returns the IP);
5. verify that the port for the DNS service is running on the server;
6. verify that DNS is working;
7. Configuration errors occur if your DNS server is queried.
How to use
To submit a correct request is sufficient to change the domain on which to perform the query, the rest of the data can
remain unchanged. The command will be executed using the DNS server and default settings of NetworkAdministrator.it.
The tool is based on RFC 1035 .
Although the tool complies with the regulations of the network, those who have read the RFC
will have noticed that not all queries have been implemented. Well, this was done deliberately because all
queries can not be selected are of little or no use in any work environment today, and if someone wants to give
further implementations of the queries we will be happy to meet the demand.
